Reveal example and teaching notes
The castle rose from the hill in layers of grey stone, its towers bristling against a cloudy sky. Inside the gatehouse, the air was cool and smelled of damp straw. Iron hinges groaned above the narrow passage, and the sound of soldiers’ boots echoed between the walls. In the courtyard a blacksmith struck red-hot metal, sending sparks into the morning air. Beyond him the great hall’s windows glimmered with firelight, promising warmth after the draughty battlements.
