Reveal example and teaching notes

The old boathouse leaned over the river like a weary fisherman, its wooden doors warped by years of damp and sun. Inside, green light seeped between the planks, revealing ropes coiled on rusty hooks, oars stacked against the wall and a narrow boat resting upside down on trestles. The air smelled of wet timber and mud. Every few seconds a wave tapped the posts below, and the whole building answered with a gentle creak. Somewhere under the floor, a fish broke the surface of the water.

Learn from the example

  • Concrete details build an impression of the subject. Notice how those choices work together rather than reading as a list of general adjectives.
  • The viewpoint controls what the reader notices. Choose details and an order that sustain the task's requested perspective and atmosphere.
