I woke to something brushing my cheek. At first I thought it was my curtain, but the touch was cool and feathery. When I opened my eyes, I found a fern bending over me.
Above, tall pine trees reached into a sky the colour of pale milk. A few drops of dew clung to their needles. Beneath my back, the forest floor was soft with moss, and the air smelled of damp bark and wild mint.
I sat up slowly. Somewhere nearby, water trickled over stones. A blackbird called from a branch, and its song was answered by another, farther away. I listened until I could tell where the stream must be.
Every movement revealed something new. A spider's web stretched between two bushes like silver lace. A line of ants disappeared beneath a curled leaf. Through a gap in the trees I could see a clearing lit by the early sun.
At first, I felt uneasy. I did not know how I had arrived here, or which direction led home. Then the quiet began to settle around me. It was unlike the silence of an empty room; it seemed full of small, busy lives.
I stood, brushed the leaves from my clothes and followed the sound of water. As the sunlight warmed my face, curiosity gently replaced fear.
