The Day the Sea Lifted Me Up

The most exciting day of my life began with a grey sky and a terrible feeling that I had made a mistake. I was standing on a beach, wearing a life jacket, about to try sailing for the first time.

“Ready?” called the instructor.

Before I could answer, the small boat tilted and shot forwards. Cold spray struck my cheeks. I gripped the rope so tightly that my knuckles turned white, while the sail snapped above me like a flag in a storm.

At first, I could think only about falling into the water. Then the instructor told me to steer towards a distant yellow buoy. I took a breath, adjusted the tiller and felt the boat respond. Suddenly, instead of fighting the wind, I was travelling with it.

We rounded the buoy just as sunlight broke through the clouds. The waves glittered around us, and the shore seemed impossibly far away. I laughed out loud. I was actually doing it!

When we returned to the beach, my legs wobbled as I climbed out. I was soaked, exhausted and grinning. That morning, I had been afraid of the sea; by the afternoon, I wanted nothing more than to sail across it again.
