Merchant Taylors’ School in Northwood is a highly selective boys’ day school with a history reaching back to the sixteenth century and a spacious, green campus. Alongside strong academic teaching, it is particularly associated with ambitious music, drama, sport, engineering and design opportunities, encouraging pupils to think inventively as well as perform well in examinations. It is entirely separate from the school of the same name in Crosby, Liverpool.
Its principal entry is 11+ into Year 7, with approximately 140 boys joining in a typical year according to published school-review guidance; exact offers can vary. Candidates sit the school’s English, maths and distinctive general paper and, if shortlisted, attend an interview, with scholarships and bursaries considered separately. Merchant Taylors’ no longer runs a normal 13+ external admissions route, so families seeking a Year 9 start should not assume places will be available.
