Books vs. Movies

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

Write a discursive essay exploring the question: Which is better – reading a book or watching its movie adaptation?

In your essay, discuss the unique advantages and challenges of both mediums. You should explore how each format tells a story and how they compare, using specific examples of books and their film adaptations that you are familiar with. You do not need to choose one over the other, but you must present a balanced, well-reasoned discussion.

📝 Sample Answer

When it comes to stories, I often wonder if reading a book or watching its movie is better. Both have their own magic!

Reading a book, like 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', lets my imagination run wild. I can picture Hogwarts exactly how I want, and the book has so many details about spells and friendships that a movie might miss. I love how books let me spend more time with the characters, getting to know their thoughts and feelings deeply. It feels like a longer, more personal adventure.

However, movies are fantastic because they bring everything to life. Seeing Harry fly on his broomstick or the giant troll in the girls' bathroom in the 'Harry Potter' film is incredibly exciting! The music, the actors' voices, and the special effects make the story feel very real and immediate. Sometimes, though, the movie has to cut out parts of the book, which can be a bit disappointing if it's your favourite scene. Also, the characters might not look exactly how I imagined them when I was reading. Even though movies are visually stunning, books often give you a richer, more detailed world to get lost in, because your mind is the best special effects studio of all!
