Dangerous Sports: Limits

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

Task Write a balanced discussion exploring whether children your age should be allowed to participate in risky or extreme sports.

Requirements

  • Genre: Discursive writing presenting arguments both for and against.
  • Content: Use specific examples of extreme sports to support your points.
  • Tone: Objective and balanced, exploring both the potential risks and the rewards before reaching a reasoned conclusion.

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Think about different 'dangerous' sports like rock climbing, skateboarding, or even competitive gymnastics.

  • •

Make two lists: one for the good things (rewards) about children doing these sports, and one for the bad things (risks).

  • •

Remember to talk about both sides of the argument in your writing – don't just pick one!

  • •

Use linking words like 'however,' 'on the other hand,' or 'some people believe' to show different ideas.

  • •

Give examples! If you talk about a sport, explain why it's risky or how it helps you grow.

  • •

Imagine you are explaining this topic clearly to a friend who wants to understand both sides.

📝 Sample Answer

Some people believe that children should definitely be allowed to try exciting sports like rock climbing or skateboarding. They argue that these activities teach you to be brave and strong, and you learn to push yourself to do new things. For example, a child might fall a few times while skateboarding, but by persevering, they build confidence and feel a great sense of achievement. These sports can also help children develop important skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and staying fit, which helps them grow as a person.

However, other people worry a lot about children getting hurt. They point out that if you fall off a skateboard or a climbing wall, you could break a bone or get a nasty cut. They might think that the risk of serious injury isn't worth it, especially when there are many other fun sports that are much safer, like swimming or football. It's true that sometimes the injuries can be quite serious, and nobody wants to see a child hurt. So, while extreme sports can teach amazing things, we have to think very carefully about how safe they truly are for young people.
