School Day Uniform?
Write a balanced discussion piece exploring whether primary schools should switch to a four-day week with longer school days.
Your writing must examine the arguments for both sides of this debate, considering the impact on students, teachers, and families. Ensure your tone remains objective and analytical, presenting a fair view of both perspectives before reaching a reasoned conclusion.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Brainstorm: Before you write, think of at least two good things (benefits) and two tricky things (challenges) about a four-day school week.
- •
Look at both sides: Make sure you talk about why it could be good AND why it could be difficult. Use words like 'On one hand...' and 'However...'
- •
Who benefits? Think about how it would affect students (like you!), teachers, and also your families (parents, guardians).
- •
Plan your paragraphs: Write one paragraph about the good things, another about the tricky things, and a short introduction and conclusion.
📝 Sample Answer
Some people think schools should only be open four days a week, but with longer lessons each day. This is a big idea with good and bad points.
On one hand, a four-day week could be great for students. We might get an extra day for hobbies, sports, or just relaxing at home. This could help us feel more refreshed and ready to learn for the other four days. Teachers could also benefit, perhaps using the extra day for planning exciting lessons, marking homework, or for professional training. This could make them even better at teaching and help them feel less stressed.
However, there are also tricky parts. For many families, finding childcare for an extra day could be difficult and expensive for parents who work. Not every parent has an extra day off to look after their children. Also, having longer school days might make children, especially younger ones, very tired. It could be hard to concentrate towards the end of a long day, meaning we might not learn as much in those last few hours.
In conclusion, while a four-day school week sounds fun with an extra day off, we need to think carefully about how it would affect everyone. It has some exciting benefits but also some real challenges for students, teachers, and especially families.
