Team Sports vs. Individual
Write a discursive essay exploring the question: Is it better for children to participate in team sports or individual activities?
In your essay, you should:
- Discuss the unique benefits of team-based sports and activities.
- Discuss the unique benefits of individual sports and pursuits.
- Use relevant examples from your own experiences, observations, or knowledge of different activities.
- Conclude by evaluating whether one is truly better, or if children benefit most from a balance of both.
Audience: Your peers and teachers.
Tone: Balanced, formal, and persuasive.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Plan First: Before writing, list ideas for team sports and individual activities. What are the good things about each?
- •
Two Sides: Remember to discuss both team sports (e.g., football) and individual activities (e.g., swimming).
- •
Give Reasons: Don't just say something is good; explain why! For example, 'Football teaches teamwork because...'
- •
Linking Words: Use words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'also', and 'because' to connect your ideas smoothly.
- •
Your Conclusion: Finish by summarising what you've discussed. You can say which one you think is slightly better, or why both are important.
📝 Sample Answer
When children choose to play sports or learn new things, they often wonder if it's better to be part of a team or do something by themselves. Both team sports and individual activities have wonderful things to offer.
Team sports, like football or basketball, are brilliant for teaching children how to work together. You learn to pass the ball, cheer on your friends, and understand that everyone has a role. This helps you make new friends and feel like you belong. If one person makes a mistake, the team helps them out, which teaches kindness and support.
On the other hand, individual activities, such as swimming or playing the piano, teach you a different set of important skills. When you swim, you learn to push yourself and set your own goals, like swimming a certain number of lengths. This takes lots of self-discipline because you have to practise even when you don't feel like it. The feeling of achieving something by yourself, like mastering a new song on an instrument, is a huge boost to your confidence.
In conclusion, both types of activities are really important for children. Team sports teach us about friendship and working with others, while individual activities help us become strong, determined, and confident in ourselves. A mix of both can help children grow into well-rounded individuals.
