Celebrity Endorsements
Write a discursive essay exploring the impact and ethics of celebrity endorsements.
Your essay should address:
- Influence: Do famous people genuinely persuade consumers to buy products, or do people see through these advertisements?
- Ethics: Is it right for celebrities to promote products, especially when highly paid, and should they only endorse things they actually use?
Consider the specific impact on young people and provide clear reasons to support your balanced discussion.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
What is a 'celebrity endorsement'? It's when a famous person (like a pop star or footballer) tells you to buy something.
- •
Think about famous people you know. Do you listen when they promote something? Why or why not?
- •
Is it good or bad? Think about both sides. Is it fair for them to do this?
- •
Give reasons for your ideas! Don't just say 'yes,' say 'yes, because...'
- •
Imagine you're explaining your thoughts to a friend.
📝 Sample Answer
I think celebrity endorsements do make some people want to buy things, especially if it's a famous footballer promoting new boots. Kids who look up to them might think, 'If he wears them, I'll play better!' It makes the product look cool and popular. However, I don't always think it's ethical. Sometimes, celebrities promote things just for money, even if they don't really use or like the product themselves. It can feel a bit like they're tricking people into buying something that might not be very good, just because they're famous. It's not fair if people spend their pocket money on something that isn't worth it because a celebrity said it was great.
