Primary & ElementaryChallengingDiscursive Writing

Task: Write a discussion piece exploring whether children should learn about plastic pollution and its global impacts from a young age.

In your writing, you must:

  • Explore the arguments in favour of teaching young children about plastic pollution.
  • Explore the arguments against introducing these complex, serious environmental issues early.
  • Present both viewpoints fairly and objectively.
  • Conclude with your own reasoned perspective on the matter.

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Think of good reasons for teaching children about plastic problems early (e.g., they can help, learn good habits).

  • •

Think of reasons against teaching them too early (e.g., it might be scary, they're too young).

  • •

Use 'linking words' like 'Firstly', 'However', 'On the other hand', 'In conclusion' to connect your ideas.

  • •

Write an introduction that explains what you're discussing, and a conclusion that sums up your thoughts.

  • •

Try to give examples – maybe something you've seen about plastic pollution or how people are trying to help.

📝 Sample Answer

Many people wonder if children should learn about plastic pollution when they are still quite young. It's a tricky question because there are good reasons for and against it.

On one hand, teaching children about plastic problems early could be really helpful. If we learn about how plastic harms animals and our planet from a young age, we might grow up to be more careful. We could learn good habits like recycling, reusing things, and choosing products with less plastic. This could mean we become 'eco-heroes' who help protect the Earth for the future. For example, if I know my plastic bottle might end up in the ocean, I'll definitely try to recycle it.

However, some people think that learning about serious problems like plastic pollution too early might make children worried or scared. The world can seem like a big, scary place when you hear about all its problems. Perhaps children should enjoy being young and learn about these things when they are a bit older and can understand them better without getting too anxious. It might also be hard for young children to grasp very complex environmental ideas.

In my opinion, I think it's important for children to learn about plastic problems, but in a way that isn't too frightening. We can learn about it through fun projects, stories, and by seeing how we can make a positive difference. This way, we can become aware and helpful without feeling overwhelmed.
