The Power of Forgiveness
Write a discursive essay exploring the question: Should we always forgive those who hurt us?
In your writing, you must:
- Discuss the benefits of forgiveness for individuals and relationships.
- Explore the challenges of forgiving, including situations where it might be difficult or inappropriate.
- Use examples from real life, literature, or history to support your points.
- Present a balanced argument before reaching a clear, reasoned conclusion.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Think: What does 'forgiveness' truly mean? It's letting go of anger, not forgetting.
- •
Imagine a time someone upset you. Did you forgive them? How did it feel?
- •
List reasons why forgiving can be good (e.g., you feel happier, friendships mend).
- •
List reasons why it can be hard or not always right (e.g., if they keep doing it, if it was very hurtful).
- •
Use real or made-up examples from your life or stories to show your points.
- •
Structure your writing: Start with an introduction, discuss both sides, then share your final thoughts.
📝 Sample Answer
Forgiveness is a tricky thing. Sometimes it feels like the best idea, but other times it feels impossible. Is it always better to forgive someone who has wronged you? I think it depends on the situation.
On one hand, forgiving someone can be really good for you. When my friend Leo accidentally knocked over my tower of blocks, I was very cross. But after a while, I realised holding onto that anger just made me feel grumpy. When I told him it was okay, and he said sorry again, we could play together properly, and I felt much happier. It helps to mend friendships and makes you feel lighter inside, instead of carrying around a heavy feeling of anger. It means you can move on and not keep thinking about the bad thing.
However, there are times when forgiving someone is very hard or might not be the right choice. If someone keeps doing unkind things, even after you've forgiven them, it might be difficult to trust them again. Or if something very serious has happened, like someone being really mean on purpose, it can take a long, long time to even think about forgiveness. Sometimes, you need to protect yourself and make sure you don't get hurt again. It's important to remember that forgiveness is a choice, not something you have to do.
In conclusion, while forgiveness can bring peace and mend relationships, it's not always easy or appropriate. It's a personal journey, and sometimes it's okay to take your time or decide that, for now, you can't forgive.
