The Power of Kindness

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

Write a discursive essay exploring the question: Is being kind always the best approach, even when others are not kind to you?

In your writing, you must:

  • Explore both sides of the argument, looking at the benefits of kindness as well as the challenges or limitations.
  • Use evidence such as real-life examples, stories, or personal observations to support your points.
  • Conclude clearly by sharing your own reasoned viewpoint based on the arguments you have presented.

Ensure your essay is well-structured, balanced, and maintains a thoughtful, discursive tone throughout.

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Think about times when someone was kind to you, or when you were kind to someone else. How did it feel?

  • •

Imagine if everyone in your class (or even the world!) was always kind. What would it be like?

  • •

Remember to discuss both sides: why kindness is great, but also think about if it's tricky when others aren't kind back.

  • •

Use examples from stories you know or things that have happened to you.

  • •

Finish by telling us what you think is the most important message about kindness.

📝 Sample Answer

Being kind is usually a wonderful thing. When I share my sweets with my little brother, even if he didn't ask nicely, it makes him smile and then I feel good too. It's like a warm feeling inside. And at school, when someone falls over and another person helps them up, it makes everyone feel safer and happier.

However, it's not always easy to be kind. Sometimes, if someone says something mean to me, my first thought is to say something mean back or just ignore them. It feels unfair to be kind when they haven't been kind to me. It takes a lot of bravery to choose kindness when you're feeling hurt or angry. Sometimes, people might even take advantage of your kindness.

Even though it's hard, I think being kind is almost always the best approach. If you keep being kind, even a little bit, it can sometimes change how the other person acts. It's like planting a tiny seed of good feeling. It also helps you feel better about yourself, knowing you've tried to make things better. So yes, even when others aren't kind, trying to be kind back, or at least not being unkind, is the best way to make the world a nicer place for everyone.
