Child Advertisements: Fair?

Secondary & High SchoolAdvancedDiscursive Writing

Write a balanced discussion exploring whether there should be stricter regulations on advertisements aimed at children.

Your writing must:

  • Present both sides of the debate fairly, exploring the arguments for protecting children and the arguments for business freedom.
  • Use real-world examples of advertisements (such as toys, games, or food) to support your points.
  • Conclude with your own reasoned viewpoint on the issue.

Aim to write for a general audience, maintaining a formal and persuasive tone throughout.

Adverts for children are everywhere! On my favourite TV shows, on YouTube, and even in games. Sometimes they look really fun, like the new robot toy or the super-sweet cereal with a prize inside. But is it fair that companies try so hard to make kids want things?

Some people think that companies should be able to advertise whatever they want. They say it's how businesses work, and parents can always say 'no' if a child asks for something. They might argue that adverts help children learn about new products and choose what they like. For example, if I see an advert for a new book, it might make me want to read it.

However, I think there should be stricter rules. Sometimes adverts make things look much better than they really are. A toy might look amazing on TV, but when you get it, it's not as exciting. Also, adverts for sugary foods can make children want unhealthy snacks, which isn't good for them. Children are easily persuaded, and it's hard for us to know if an advert is telling the whole truth or just trying to get us to buy something. It can also make kids feel sad if they can't have all the cool things they see advertised.

In conclusion, while companies need to sell their products, I believe that children need more protection. Adverts should be clearer and fairer, perhaps with fewer adverts for unhealthy foods or toys that break easily. It would be better if adverts helped children make good choices, rather than just wanting everything they see.
