Privacy in the Digital Age

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

Write a balanced discussion exploring the concept of privacy in the digital age.

In your writing, examine the tension between the convenience of sharing information online and the need to protect our personal data. Consider different perspectives on why digital privacy matters, what makes it difficult to maintain, and who should ultimately be responsible for safeguarding our information (such as individuals, tech companies, or governments).

Aim to present a well-reasoned, objective exploration of these different viewpoints before reaching a clear conclusion.

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Imagine your own secrets: what would you want to keep private online?

  • •

Think about places you share information online, like games or websites. What kind of info is it? (e.g., your username, photos, what you like).

  • •

Consider why privacy is important. What could happen if your information isn't private?

  • •

Who do you think should help keep your information safe online? Is it you, your parents, or the websites themselves?

  • •

Try to think of two different points of view for your discussion – maybe why sharing is good sometimes, but privacy is still important.

📝 Sample Answer

Privacy online is super important, just like having your own secret space. When I play games or watch videos, sometimes I have to use a username or even share what I like. If everyone knew everything about me, like where I live or all my photos, it wouldn't feel safe. It's tricky because lots of websites ask for information, and sometimes it's hard to know what's okay to share and what's not. I think it's my job to be careful about what I post, and my parents help me too by checking websites. But the companies that make the games and websites should also work hard to keep our information private, so bad people can't get it. It's like a team effort to keep our digital diaries locked up!
