Fast Fashion Ethics

Secondary & High SchoolAdvancedDiscursive Writing

Write a discursive essay exploring the debate between fast fashion and sustainable fashion. Your writing should examine the balance between affordability and trendiness on one side, and environmental impact and ethical working conditions on the other.

Key requirements:

  • Present a balanced view of both sides before reaching a conclusion.
  • Consider the perspectives of everyday consumers, garment workers, and the planet.
  • Conclude with your own reasoned perspective on the best way forward for the fashion industry.

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Understand Key Words: 'Fast fashion' means buying lots of cheap, new clothes quickly. 'Sustainable fashion' means buying clothes that are kind to the planet and the people who make them.

  • •

Think Both Ways: What are the good things about fast fashion (e.g., cheap, trendy)? What are the bad things (e.g., waste, pollution)? Do the same for sustainable fashion.

  • •

Use Examples: Think about your own clothes. Where do they come from? How long do they last?

  • •

Share Your Opinion: After looking at both sides, what do YOU think? Is it better to buy fast fashion or sustainable clothes? You can say it's a tricky choice!

  • •

Structure Your Writing: Start by explaining the problem, then talk about fast fashion, then sustainable fashion, and finish with your conclusion.

📝 Sample Answer

Fast fashion means we can buy new tops and trousers very cheaply, which is great if you want to keep up with trends or don't have much money. It's fun to have lots of choices! However, I've learned that making so many clothes so quickly can hurt our planet. Factories use lots of water and chemicals, and old clothes often get thrown away, making big piles of rubbish.

Sustainable fashion, on the other hand, tries to be kinder. These clothes might cost more, but they are often made from recycled materials or last a very long time. This means less waste and less pollution. The people who make them are usually treated better too.

It's a tricky choice. I think it's good to have some affordable clothes, but we should also try to buy more sustainable things when we can, maybe fewer items but better quality ones. It's about finding a balance to help both our wallets and our Earth.
