Robots: Friend or Foe?

Primary & ElementaryChallengingDiscursive Writing

Write a balanced discussion exploring whether robots are a "friend" or a "foe" to humanity.

Your task:

  • Present arguments for both sides of the debate, exploring how robots could positively impact our lives and the potential risks or challenges they might bring.
  • Explain the reasoning behind different viewpoints clearly.
  • Conclude with your own reasoned judgment on the future of human-robot relations.

Ensure your writing is structured, objective, and reaches a clear final conclusion.

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Brainstorm both sides: Make a list of all the good things robots could do (friends, helpers) and all the worries you might have about them (taking jobs, less human talk).

  • •

Give examples: Think about robots you've seen in films, books, or even real life. How do they act?

  • •

Organise your ideas: Use one paragraph for why robots are good, and another for why they might be a worry.

  • •

Share your opinion: At the end, tell us what you think overall – are they more friend or foe?

📝 Sample Answer

Robots are becoming more and more common, and it makes you wonder if they will be our best friends or cause us trouble.

On one hand, robots could be amazing helpers. Imagine a robot that could tidy your room, cook dinner, or even help you with your homework! They could do boring jobs, leaving humans free to do more creative things. For older people, a robot companion could offer company and help them around the house, making them feel less lonely. In hospitals, robots could help doctors and nurses, making sure everyone gets the best care.

However, there are also worries about robots. If robots do all the chores and jobs, what will humans do? Some people might lose their jobs, which could be very sad. Also, if we spend too much time with robots, we might forget how to talk and play with real people. What if robots become too clever and we can't control them anymore, like in some science fiction movies? That could be quite scary.

Overall, I think robots could be both a friend and a foe. It depends on how we use them. If we are careful and make sure they help us without taking over, then they could be wonderful. But we must remember to keep our human connections strong and always be in charge.
