Museums: Past or Future?
Write a discursive essay exploring whether museums should focus on preserving and teaching us about the past, or if they should look ahead to showcase future technologies and ideas.
Your Task:
- Decide on your viewpoint: should museums focus on the past, the future, or a balance of both?
- Write a balanced argument that considers different perspectives before reaching a clear conclusion.
- Aim your writing at your peers, using persuasive language and clear reasons to support your ideas.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Think about what you love learning about from the past in museums (e.g., dinosaurs, ancient Egyptians).
- •
Imagine what amazing future things you'd like to see in a museum (e.g., space travel, robots, new inventions).
- •
Decide if museums should mostly show the past, mostly the future, or a mix of both.
- •
Give good reasons for your choice. Use words like "because," "also," "however."
- •
Remember to talk about both sides a little bit before you explain what you think.
📝 Sample Answer
Museums are fantastic for showing us cool things from long ago, like real dinosaur bones and old Roman coins. It's super important to know where we came from and what happened in history. We can learn so much about how people lived, what tools they used, and how our world changed over thousands of years. Without museums, we might forget all these amazing stories from the past.
However, I also think museums could be even more exciting if they showed us more about the future! Imagine seeing what new gadgets we might use, or how we might travel to other planets. It would be amazing to walk through a museum and see robots that can talk, or learn about cities built underwater. Seeing what scientists and inventors are working on right now, or what they predict for the future, could inspire us to be the next generation of creators.
I believe museums should have a mix. We need to remember the past, but it would be so much fun to get excited about what's coming next too. Maybe one room could be about ancient Egypt, and the next could be about future space stations! That way, we learn from history and dream about tomorrow, making museums brilliant places for everyone.
