Celebrity Privacy: Deserved or Lost?

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

Write a balanced discursive essay exploring whether famous people—such as athletes, musicians, and actors—should have the same right to privacy as ordinary citizens, or if losing privacy is an inevitable price of fame.

Your essay must:

  • Present a balanced argument examining both sides of the debate.
  • Support each perspective with clear reasons and realistic examples.
  • Conclude with your own reasoned viewpoint on the issue.
  • Maintain a formal, objective tone throughout your discussion.

💡 Writing Tips

  • •

Think about what 'privacy' really means for everyone, not just celebrities.

  • •

List reasons for celebrities having privacy, and reasons against it (why some might think they shouldn't have full privacy).

  • •

Use connecting words like 'on the one hand' and 'on the other hand' to show different ideas.

  • •

Give examples! Think about famous people you know and how their lives are shared or kept private.

  • •

Finish with your own opinion, explaining clearly why you think that way.

📝 Sample Answer

Being famous must be very exciting, but it also means everyone knows who you are. This brings up a big question: should celebrities have the same privacy as normal people?

On the one hand, I think famous people definitely deserve privacy. Just because someone is good at singing or football, it doesn't mean their whole life should be put in magazines or on TV. Imagine if every time you went to the park, someone took your photo and wrote about what you were doing! It would feel very strange and unfair. Celebrities are still human beings with families and feelings, and they need quiet time away from the public eye, just like everyone else. Their homes, their children, and their personal problems should be their own business.

However, some people argue that giving up some privacy is just part of being famous. When you choose to be a pop star or an actor, you know that people will be interested in you. Public interest can help make them even more famous and successful. Sometimes, what a celebrity does can also influence young people, so some might say the public has a right to know certain things, especially if it affects others. For example, if a famous person does something illegal, it should probably be reported.

In my opinion, while celebrities do choose a public life, they should still have a strong right to privacy, especially about their families and private moments. It's a balance. We can admire their work without needing to know every single detail of their personal lives. Everyone deserves a safe space away from the cameras.
