Global Warming: Alarmist or Reality?
Write a balanced discursive essay exploring the debate surrounding global warming. You must present both viewpoints fairly and objectively: the perspective that climate change is an urgent crisis requiring immediate action, and the counter-argument that the warnings may be exaggerated or part of natural cycles.
Key Requirements:
- Introduction: Introduce the debate clearly to the reader.
- Arguments for Urgency: Present the evidence and reasoning supporting immediate action.
- Counter-arguments: Present the perspective of those who believe the threat is alarmist or natural.
- Conclusion: Summarize both sides and offer a reasoned final judgment.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Start by explaining what 'global warming' means in your own words.
- •
Think about the 'evidence' – what changes are scientists seeing around the world? (e.g., melting ice, hotter weather).
- •
Now, think about why some people might not think it's such a big deal. What might they say?
- •
Use linking words like 'on the one hand', 'however', or 'but' to show you're talking about different ideas.
- •
Try to show both sides of the argument fairly before you share your own ideas at the end.
📝 Sample Answer
Global warming is when our Earth is slowly getting hotter, mostly because of things humans do like burning fuels in cars and factories. Many scientists are very worried about this. They show us evidence like the polar ice caps melting, which makes sea levels rise and could flood places where people live. They also point to more extreme weather, like really hot summers or powerful storms, which they say are happening more often. Because of these changes, scientists believe we need to act very quickly to stop the planet from getting even warmer. They suggest we use less energy, drive less, and find cleaner ways to power our homes.
However, not everyone agrees that global warming is such a huge emergency. Some people think that the Earth's climate has always changed naturally over thousands of years, and that what we're seeing now is just part of that natural cycle. They might argue that the warnings are too 'alarmist' and that scientists are exaggerating the danger. Others might say that making big changes to stop global warming would cost too much money and might harm our way of life. They might also believe that new technologies will come along to fix the problem in the future, so we don't need to panic right now. It's clear there are different ideas about how serious global warming is and what we should do about it.
