Write a discursive essay exploring whether it is better to have a small circle of close friends (quality) or a large group of diverse friends (quantity).
Your task:
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both perspectives.
- Include the key concepts of support, variety, and reliability in your discussion.
- Conclude by sharing your own viewpoint or suggesting a balance between the two.
Write in an engaging, balanced style suitable for a general audience.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Start by brainstorming: What are the good things (advantages) and not-so-good things (disadvantages) for having a few close friends AND many friends?
- •
Think about the keywords: How do 'support', 'variety', and 'reliability' fit into both kinds of friendship?
- •
Try to write one paragraph about 'quality' friends and another about 'quantity' friends.
- •
Use linking words like 'on the other hand', 'however', or 'also' to connect your ideas smoothly.
- •
Finish by sharing your own balanced opinion or a conclusion about what you think is best.
📝 Sample Answer
When we think about friends, it's interesting to wonder if it's better to have a few best buddies or lots of friends. Both ways have good points and sometimes not-so-good points.
Having a few very close friends can be wonderful. These friends often give you amazing support because they know you really well and understand your feelings. You can usually rely on them to be there for you, whether you need a hug or someone to share a secret with. The disadvantage might be that you only hear ideas from a small group, which might not offer much variety.
On the other hand, having a wide circle of many friends brings lots of variety to your life. You might have friends from different clubs, sports, or even different schools, and they can teach you new things or introduce you to new games. While you might get different kinds of support from different people, it can sometimes be harder to rely on everyone in a big group in the same way you would a best friend.
In conclusion, both types of friendship are special. A few close friends offer deep connections and reliability, while many friends offer fun and variety. Perhaps the best thing is to have a mix – a few trusted best friends and a wider group of friendly acquaintances to share different parts of your life with.
