Driverless Cars: Future of Travel?

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine a world where cars drive themselves! No human hands on the wheel, no feet on the pedals – just smart computers getting you safely from A to B. These are 'driverless cars', and they're not just science fiction anymore; they're already being tested on our roads.

Your mission is to explore this exciting idea. We want you to write about the good things (the 'pros') that driverless cars could bring. Think about how they might make journeys safer (no tired or distracted drivers!) and more efficient (cars could talk to each other to avoid traffic jams!).

But it's not all smooth sailing! We also want you to think about the problems or worries (the 'cons') they might cause. What about people whose jobs involve driving, like taxi drivers or lorry drivers – what would happen to them? And what if a driverless car had to make a very difficult choice in an emergency? Whose fault would it be?

Your writing should look at both sides of the argument, showing you've thought carefully about the future of travel. Is it a dream come true, or are there big bumps in the road ahead?

💡 Writing Tips

  • Think 'For and Against': What are the good things about driverless cars? What are the not-so-good things?

  • Give Examples: If you say driverless cars are safer, explain why. If you worry about jobs, say whose jobs.

  • Use Linking Words: Words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'also', 'but' help connect your ideas.

  • Start and Finish Strong: Begin with an introduction and end with a conclusion that sums up your thoughts.

📝 Sample Answer

Driverless cars sound like something from a futuristic film, but they are becoming real! I think there are some brilliant things about them, but also some tricky problems to think about.

One great thing is how much safer our roads could be. Computers don't get tired or distracted by their phones like human drivers can. This means fewer accidents, which is fantastic! Also, driverless cars could make traffic much smoother. They could all talk to each other and choose the best routes, so we spend less time stuck in jams. Imagine getting to school quicker every day!

However, I also have some worries. What about all the people who drive for a living, like taxi drivers, bus drivers, and delivery drivers? If cars drive themselves, these people might lose their jobs, and that's a big problem for families. Another tricky part is who is responsible if a driverless car does have an accident. Is it the car company, the person in the car, or the computer? It's a very difficult question to answer.

So, while driverless cars offer exciting possibilities for safer and easier travel, we also need to carefully consider the impact on people's jobs and how we decide who is accountable when things go wrong.
