Early Mornings: Productive or Painful?
The Prompt
Imagine some people love waking up super early, even before the sun! They say it helps them get lots done, like reading, exercising, or finishing homework before school. They feel like they have a secret head start on the day.
But then there are other people who love sleeping in. They feel much better and more ready for the day if they get lots of sleep, especially children! They might say that not enough sleep makes you grumpy, tired, and it's harder to learn new things at school.
Your job is to write a discussion piece where you explore both sides of this idea. Think about:
- What are the good things about waking up early? (e.g., quiet time, getting things done)
- What are the good things about getting enough sleep? (e.g., feeling refreshed, concentrating better at school, being healthy)
- Why is getting enough sleep extra important for children your age?
Try to present both arguments fairly, like you're a judge listening to two different teams. What do you think? Is it better to be an early bird or a sleepy head, especially for primary school pupils?
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Think about two teams: Team Early Bird (wakes up early) and Team Sleepy Head (sleeps in). What would each team say is good about their way?
- •
Give reasons for your ideas. Use words like 'because' or 'this means that' to explain your points.
- •
Remember to talk about why getting enough sleep is especially important for children your age.
- •
Try to use linking words like 'however', 'on the other hand', or 'also' to connect your different ideas.
- •
Start by introducing the topic and finish by summarising what you've discussed.
📝 Sample Answer
Waking up early can feel like a real challenge, especially when your bed is so comfy! Some people believe that getting up with the sun means you have more time to do things like read a book quietly or even go for a quick run before school starts. They say it makes them feel prepared and ready to tackle the day, almost like they have extra secret hours. My dad sometimes wakes up early to do his work and says the house is so peaceful.
However, many children, including me, know how important it is to get enough sleep. If I don't get a good night's rest, I feel tired and grumpy at school. It's much harder to concentrate in class, and sometimes I even forget things. My teacher always says that our brains need sleep to grow and remember all the new things we learn. So, while an early start might sound good for some, for young people, a good amount of sleep often means we're happier and ready to learn all day long.
