Advertising: Helpful or Harmful?

The Prompt

Imagine a world without adverts – would it be boring? Or would it be a relief? Adverts are everywhere! On TV, online, on billboards, and even in your favourite magazines. They try to make us want things, from new toys to yummy snacks, or even places to visit.

For this writing task, we want you to be a super detective and investigate advertising. Is it mostly a good thing, helping us learn about new products and keeping shops busy? Or is it mostly a bad thing, making us feel like we need things we don't really, or encouraging us to buy unhealthy treats?

Think about both sides:

Good things about adverts (Helpful):

  • Do they show us cool new things or tell us about important events?
  • Do they help businesses sell products and keep people in jobs?
  • Do they sometimes tell us about safety messages or healthy choices?

Bad things about adverts (Harmful):

  • Do they sometimes try to trick us into wanting things?
  • Do they make us feel bad if we don't have the latest gadget?
  • Do they encourage us to eat too much sugary food or buy things we don't need?

Your job is to write a discussion, exploring both the 'helpful' and 'harmful' sides of advertising. You don't have to pick a side, just explore the ideas! Use examples from adverts you've seen to make your points stronger. Let's get thinking!

📝 Sample Answer

Adverts are like colourful puzzles all around us, on TV, YouTube, and even when we walk past shops. Some people think adverts are really helpful, like little guides telling us about new toys or exciting films coming out. For example, if I didn't see an advert for a new video game, I might never know it existed! Adverts also help companies sell their things, which means people have jobs making and selling those products. It's like a big chain reaction that keeps shops busy.

However, other people believe adverts can be a bit sneaky and even harmful. Sometimes, they make us feel like we must have the latest, coolest thing, even if we don't really need it. I've seen adverts for sugary cereals that look super fun, but my mum says they aren't very healthy. Adverts can sometimes make us want things just because everyone else seems to have them, which can make us feel a bit sad if we can't get them. So, while adverts can show us exciting new things, we also need to be careful and think if we truly need what they are selling.
