Noise in Cities: Annoying or Alive?
The Prompt
Imagine you're standing in the middle of a busy city. What can you hear? Maybe the rumble of buses, the chatter of people, the distant wail of a siren, or music from a street performer. Cities are full of sounds! But are all these noises a bad thing?
Your task is to explore both sides of the argument:
- Is city noise just annoying? Do loud sounds like traffic jams, building work, or constant chatter make cities stressful and take away from how nice it is to live there? Think about how they might stop people from relaxing or even make you feel grumpy.
- Or is city noise exciting and full of life? Do sounds like laughter from a playground, the buzz of a market, or the beat of music tell us that the city is awake and full of energy? Think about how these sounds can make a place feel vibrant and alive, showing all the amazing things happening.
We want you to write about your ideas. Do you think city noise is mostly a big bother, or do you think it's a fantastic part of what makes a city special and full of life? You can even say that some noises are annoying and others are brilliant!

š Sample Answer
When I think about noise in cities, my mind often goes to the really annoying sounds first. The constant honking of cars stuck in traffic is probably the worst. It makes me feel stressed and like I canāt hear myself think. Also, when builders are working nearby, their drills and hammers can be so loud they make my teeth ache! These noises definitely feel like a nuisance, taking away from how peaceful a city could be. Sometimes, I just want a bit of quiet.
However, not all city noise is bad. In fact, some sounds make the city feel alive and exciting! I love hearing the chatter and laughter of people walking past shops, or the happy squeals of children playing in a park. The music from a street performerās guitar can make me tap my feet, and even the distant rumble of a train can make me think of all the journeys people are on. These sounds are like the city's heartbeat, showing that thereās always something happening and lots of energy. So, while some city noises can be a real bother, others definitely make the city feel vibrant and full of life.
