The Prompt

Imagine diving into a whole new world, right from your comfy chair! Many schools encourage us to read books just for fun, not because we have to for homework. This is called 'reading for pleasure'.

Your task is to write about why reading for pleasure is so important. Think about all the amazing things it does for you, even beyond helping you with school work.

  • Spark your Imagination: How do books help you picture dragons, magical lands, or brave heroes in your mind?
  • Grow your Vocabulary: Have you ever learned a cool new word from a story? How does reading help you understand and use more words?
  • Understand the World: How do books teach you about different countries, cultures, or how other people might feel? They can even help you understand yourself better!

Share your thoughts and feelings about why picking up a book just for enjoyment is a truly valuable thing to do. Make sure to discuss how it helps your imagination, your words, and your understanding of everything around you.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Think about your favourite book! How did it make you feel? What did you learn?

  • Brainstorm ideas: How does reading help your imagination grow? What new words have you learned? How do books teach you about different places or feelings?

  • Organise your thoughts: Group similar ideas together into paragraphs. Maybe one paragraph for imagination, one for new words, and one for understanding the world.

  • Use examples! Mention books you've read or characters you've loved to show how reading has helped you.

  • Start with a clear introduction that says reading for pleasure is important, and end with a strong conclusion that reminds the reader why.

📝 Sample Answer

Reading for pleasure is incredibly important, and it's one of my favourite things to do! When I pick up a book, it's like opening a door to another world.

Firstly, books are brilliant for my imagination. When I read a fantasy story, I can see the towering castles, hear the dragons roar, and picture the brave knights in my mind. It's like my brain is creating its own movie, which is much more exciting than just watching one on a screen. My imagination feels much bigger and stronger because of all the different places and characters I've visited in books.

Secondly, reading helps me learn so many new words without even trying! Just last week, I read about a 'magnificent' wizard and a 'tremendous' adventure. These words stuck in my head, and now I can use them in my own writing and conversations. It makes my sentences sound much more interesting.

Finally, books teach me so much about the world. I've read stories set in ancient Egypt, about children living in different countries, and even about kids who feel exactly the same way I do sometimes. It helps me understand that there are so many different kinds of people and places, and it makes me think about things I wouldn't usually. So, yes, reading for pleasure is definitely important!
