School Trips: Worth It?

The Prompt

Imagine you're a super-smart school journalist, writing a special report for your school newspaper! The big question you're investigating is: Are School Trips Really Worth It?

School trips are amazing adventures that take us out of the classroom to learn new things. Your job is to discuss this topic. This means you need to explore both the good points (like the sunshine of school trips!) and the not-so-good points (like a rainy day!).

Think about the good things:

  • Educational: How do trips help you learn in new ways? (e.g., visiting a castle, a museum, or a farm).
  • Social: How do trips help you make friends, work as a team, or understand others better?
  • Cultural: How do trips show you new places, different ways of life, or exciting traditions?

Now, think about the tricky bits:

  • Cost: Do trips cost too much money? Is it fair if some children can't go?
  • Safety: Are there worries about keeping everyone safe on a trip?
  • Missing lessons: When you're on a trip, you miss your regular lessons. Is this a problem?

Your writing should weigh up all these ideas like a balanced scale. Which side feels heavier? Or do they balance out? Your report should show you've thought deeply about whether school trips are truly worth it for everyone.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Plan your ideas: Before you write, make a list of all the good things about trips and all the tricky things.

  • Give examples: For each point, think of a real school trip or a specific example to make your writing interesting.

  • Use linking words: Words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'also', and 'because' help your ideas flow smoothly.

  • Be balanced: Remember to talk about both the positives and the negatives to show you've thought about it carefully.

  • Strong start and end: Begin with an introduction that tells us what you'll be discussing, and finish with a conclusion that sums up your thoughts.

📝 Sample Answer

School trips are a really exciting part of school life, but are they always worth it? On one hand, I think they are brilliant for learning. For example, when we visited the science museum, seeing the real rockets made science much more exciting than just reading about it in a book. Trips also help us make new friends and learn to work as a team, like when we had to navigate around the zoo together. They can even introduce us to new cultures, such as when we visited a historical village and learned about old traditions.

However, there are some tricky bits too. Trips can be quite expensive, and not every family can afford the cost, which isn't fair if some children miss out. Also, sometimes we miss out on important lessons like maths or English, and it can be hard to catch up when we return. Safety is another big worry for teachers and parents, with lots of rules to follow. So, while I love school trips and think they offer amazing experiences, we need to carefully consider if the benefits always outweigh the costs and other challenges.
