Museums: Should They Be Free?

Primary & ElementaryChallengingDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine stepping into a grand museum, filled with ancient artefacts, amazing art, or fascinating science! Some museums ask for money to get in, but others let you wander and learn for free. This is a big discussion, and your job is to write about it!

We want you to explore both sides of the argument:

Why should museums charge an entry fee? Think about how much it costs to look after old treasures, keep the lights on, pay the helpful staff, and create exciting new exhibitions. Where does that money come from?

Why should museums be free for everyone? Think about how important it is for all children and families to learn about history and culture, no matter how much money they have. If museums were free, would more people visit and discover amazing things?

Your writing should discuss the strong points for charging money AND the strong points for making museums free. Try to present both sides fairly, like a balanced judge, before you finish your discussion.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Think of two teams: one arguing for charging money, one arguing for free entry. What would each team say?

  • Give clear reasons for each point you make. Don't just say 'it's good', say 'it's good because...

  • Use connecting words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'also', and 'therefore' to link your ideas smoothly.

  • Write an introduction to explain what you're discussing, then talk about both sides, and finish with a conclusion.

  • Try to be fair to both sides, even if you have a favourite!

📝 Sample Answer

Museums are wonderful places where we can learn about the past, see amazing art, and discover new things. But should we pay to go into them, or should they be free for everyone?

Some people believe museums should charge an entry fee. They argue that museums are very expensive to run. Imagine the cost of heating huge buildings, keeping the lights on, and making sure all the precious objects are safe! They also need money to pay expert staff, like curators who look after the exhibits, and people who design new, exciting displays. If museums didn't charge, they might not have enough money to do these important jobs, meaning the buildings could fall apart or the collections might not be looked after properly.

On the other hand, many people think museums should be free for everyone. They believe that learning about history and culture is a right, not something you should have to pay for. If museums were free, more families, especially those who don't have much spare money, could visit and enjoy them. This would mean more children could learn outside of school and discover new passions. It's like a library; you don't pay to borrow a book, so why pay to see ancient dinosaurs or famous paintings?

It's clear there are good reasons for both ideas. Whether museums charge or are free, the most important thing is that they continue to inspire and educate us all.
