Outdoor Play: Still Important?

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine a world where exciting video games and amazing shows are always available! Do you think children still play outside as much as they used to? Your task is to write a discursive piece – this means you'll explore an important topic, thinking about different ideas and sharing your thoughts in a clear, organised way.

Your topic is 'Outdoor Play: Still Important?' We want you to think about why playing outside is super important for children, both for their bodies (like getting strong and fit) and their minds (like being happy, imaginative, and learning to share). What amazing things do you learn or feel when you're playing in a park, garden, or even just outside your house?

Then, imagine if children didn't play outside very much. What wonderful things might they miss out on? What could be lost if we spend all our time indoors? Think about your own experiences or what you've seen. Structure your writing to discuss the good things about outdoor play first, and then talk about the things we might lose. Make sure your writing is clear and persuasive!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Brainstorm ideas: Think of all the fun things you do outside and how they make you feel.

  • Organise your thoughts: First, write about why outdoor play is good. Then, write about what happens if children don't play outside enough.

  • Use examples: Can you remember a time playing outside that helped you learn something or made you feel happy?

  • Use linking words: Words like 'Firstly', 'Also', 'However', 'Therefore' will help your writing flow.

  • Write a strong ending: Summarise your main idea and explain why outdoor play is still so important.

📝 Sample Answer

In a world full of exciting video games and endless TV shows, it's easy to forget how much fun and how important playing outside truly is. Outdoor play isn't just about running around; it's a vital part of growing up strong and happy.

Firstly, playing outside is brilliant for our bodies. When we climb trees, kick a football, or just chase our friends, we're getting exercise that makes our muscles strong and keeps our hearts healthy. It also helps us get fresh air and sunshine, which are good for us. Mentally, outdoor play sparks our imagination. Building a den in the woods or pretending a stick is a magic wand helps us be creative and learn to solve problems. We also learn to share and work together when playing games with others.

However, if children spend less time playing outdoors, they could miss out on so much. Their bodies might not get enough exercise, making them less fit. They might also spend less time using their imagination, relying more on screens to entertain them. Most importantly, they might lose that special connection with nature, like feeling the wind on their face or hearing birds sing, which can make us feel peaceful and happy. So, playing outside is definitely still important!
