Talent vs. Hard Work
The Prompt
Imagine two children: one is a natural at drawing, their pictures look amazing with hardly any effort. The other child practices drawing every single day, trying new techniques, and gradually their pictures become fantastic too. Which one do you think is more important for becoming truly great at something – being born with a special skill (talent) or working really, really hard and never giving up (hard work)?
Your task is to write a discussion where you explore both sides of this interesting question. You need to explain why natural talent might be important, and also why consistent hard work and practice are important. For each point, try to think of a real-life example or make one up – maybe someone good at sports, music, art, or even school subjects.
Think about:
- How does talent give someone a head start?
- How does hard work help people improve, even if they aren't naturally gifted?
- Can you have one without the other?
- Which do you think helps people achieve amazing things the most?
This is called 'discursive writing' because you're discussing different points of view on a topic. There's no single right answer, just good arguments!
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Think about what 'talent' means (being naturally good at something) and what 'hard work' means (practising a lot and not giving up).
- •
For each idea (talent and hard work), try to think of a real-life example or make one up (e.g., a sports star, a musician, an artist).
- •
Remember to discuss both sides of the argument fairly, not just one.
- •
Use linking words like 'however', 'on the other hand', or 'in conclusion' to connect your ideas.
- •
Start with an introduction, discuss both points with examples, and then write a conclusion sharing your final thoughts.
📝 Sample Answer
Many people wonder what helps you succeed more: being born with a special gift or working really, really hard. Both talent and hard work are important, but I think hard work often wins in the end.
Sometimes, people are naturally talented. Maybe a child can sing beautifully without any lessons, or they can kick a football perfectly the first time they try. This talent gives them a great start, and things might feel easy at first. For example, my friend Leo is amazing at drawing animals; they just seem to flow from his pencil.
However, talent isn't always enough. Even the most talented people need to practice. Think about a famous singer – they might have a great voice, but they still have to rehearse for hours to get a song just right. This is where hard work comes in. If someone isn't naturally talented but practices every single day, they can become incredibly good. My other friend, Maya, wasn't great at playing the piano at first, but she practises every afternoon. Now, she can play really complicated songs! Her hard work has made her a brilliant musician.
I believe that while talent can give you a boost, consistent hard work and never giving up are more important for achieving true mastery. Hard work can even beat talent if talent doesn't put in the effort.
