Public Transport vs. Cars

Primary & ElementaryChallengingDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine you're a clever transport expert helping people decide how to travel! Our towns and cities are growing, and everyone needs to get from A to B. But what's the best way to do it? Should we all jump on buses and trains, or is it better to have our own private car?

Your mission is to write an exciting piece of writing where you compare and contrast the good things (advantages) about using public transport (like buses, trains, and trams) with the good things about owning and driving your very own car.

Think carefully about these important points:

  • Cost: Which option saves you more money? Think about how much it costs to buy a car, pay for petrol, insurance, parking, compared to buying a bus or train ticket.
  • Environmental Impact: Which way of travelling is kinder to our planet? Think about pollution and how much fuel is used.
  • Convenience: Which is easier and more flexible? Can you go anywhere you want, any time you want? Do you have to wait for a bus or train, or can you just jump in your car and go?

Your writing should explain the advantages of both public transport and private cars, helping your reader understand the different benefits of each as we look to the future of travel!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Plan your points: Before you start writing, make a quick list of good things about public transport AND good things about private cars.

  • Compare them side-by-side: For each factor (like cost), explain the advantage for public transport AND then the advantage for a car.

  • Use linking words: Words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'but', 'also', 'whereas', and 'similarly' will help your writing flow smoothly between ideas.

  • Think about the 'why': Don't just state a point, explain why it's an advantage. For example, 'Public transport is cheaper because...' or 'Cars are more convenient as...'

  • Write an introduction and a conclusion: Start by saying what you'll talk about, and end by summing up your main ideas without picking a 'winner'.

📝 Sample Answer

Getting around our busy towns and cities is something we all do, but what's the best way? Some people really enjoy using public transport like buses and trains, while others prefer the freedom of their own car. Both ways of travelling have some really good points.

Public transport can be fantastic for your wallet. You don't have to pay for expensive petrol, car insurance, or parking, which can save a lot of money each week. It's also often much better for the environment, as one bus or train can carry many people, meaning fewer cars on the road and less air pollution. However, public transport isn't always the most convenient. You have to stick to timetables and specific routes, and sometimes you might have to wait in the rain or walk a bit further to your stop.

On the other hand, having a private car offers amazing convenience and flexibility. You can go wherever you want, whenever you want, without waiting for anyone or following a set schedule. It's perfect for carrying lots of shopping, sports gear, or for visiting places that buses and trains don't reach easily. The downside is the cost; cars are expensive to buy, fuel up, and maintain. They also create more pollution per person than a full bus or train, which isn't so good for our planet. So, while cars offer great freedom, public transport often wins on cost and helping the environment.
