Social Media: Connect or Isolate?

The Prompt

Imagine you're a detective exploring a big mystery: 'Is Social Media a Super Connector or a Secret Isolator?' Your job is to write a balanced piece, like a discussion, where you look at both sides of the story.

Part 1: The 'Super Connector' Side Think about all the amazing ways social media helps people link up. Maybe it's keeping in touch with grandparents who live far away, sharing fun moments with friends, or even joining a club for people who love the same games as you. How does it help build friendships and communities around the world?

Part 2: The 'Secret Isolator' Side Now, flip the coin. Can social media sometimes make people feel lonely, even when they're surrounded by others online? What about seeing everyone else's 'perfect' lives and feeling like yours isn't as good (this is called comparison)? Or feeling worried and anxious about what others think?

Your writing should explore both these ideas fairly, using examples from what you've seen or heard. It's not about picking a side, but showing that social media has both bright and tricky parts. What's your conclusion after looking at both sides?

📝 Sample Answer

Social media is a bit like a double-edged sword; it can be brilliant for connecting people, but it can also make some feel quite lonely. On the one hand, platforms like WhatsApp or FaceTime let me chat with my cousins who live in Australia. It feels amazing to see their faces and hear their news, even though they're so far away. It helps us feel like a big, connected family. My mum also uses a group chat to organise school events, which helps all the parents work together.

However, I've also noticed the tricky side. Sometimes, I see pictures of friends hanging out without me, and it can make me feel a bit left out or sad. It's easy to compare your life to what everyone else posts, and sometimes it feels like everyone else is having more fun. Also, some people spend so much time looking at screens that they don't play outside or talk to people face-to-face as much, which can make them feel a bit isolated in real life. So, while social media is great for reaching far and wide, we need to remember to connect with people right in front of us too.
