Eating Meat: Ethical Dilemma?

Secondary & High SchoolAdvancedDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Have you ever thought about the food on your plate? For thousands of years, people have eaten meat. It's a big part of many cultures and traditions, and it provides important energy to help us grow. But lately, more and more people are starting to ask big questions about eating meat. They wonder if it's fair to animals or always the best choice for our planet.

Your task is to explore this interesting topic. Imagine you are a detective, looking at both sides of a discussion. We want you to write about:

  1. Why do people choose to eat meat? Think about things like how it tastes, family traditions, how it helps us get strong, or how easy it is to find and cook.
  2. Why do some people choose not to eat meat? (These people might be vegetarians, who don't eat meat, or vegans, who don't eat any animal products like milk or eggs). Think about their reasons, such as caring for animals, protecting the environment, or believing it's healthier.

Remember, your job isn't to pick a side or say which is 'right' or 'wrong'. Instead, you need to show that you understand both sets of ideas, explaining them clearly and fairly. Think about how you can present the different viewpoints so someone reading your work can understand why people make different choices about eating meat.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Think about why people do eat meat (e.g., taste, tradition, protein).

  • Think about why people don't eat meat (e.g., animal welfare, environment).

  • Use connecting words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'some believe' to show different ideas.

  • Present both sides fairly, like a reporter, without saying which one you agree with.

  • Plan your writing: an introduction, a paragraph for each side, and a short conclusion.

📝 Sample Answer

Eating meat has been a part of human life for a very long time, with many people enjoying its taste and believing it helps them get important nutrients to grow big and strong. For some families, cooking meat is a special tradition passed down through generations, and it can be a convenient food to prepare, often found easily in shops.

However, many others are choosing a different path. Some people decide not to eat meat because they care deeply about animals and don't think it's fair for them to be farmed for food. Vegetarians avoid meat, while vegans go a step further, avoiding all animal products like cheese and eggs. They might also worry about how farming animals affects the environment, like using lots of water or land, and believe that plant-based foods are a healthier choice for people and the planet.
