Exams: Fair Way to Test?

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine you're trying to figure out the best way to see what someone has learned in school. We often have 'exams' – tests where you write down answers. But are exams really the fairest and best way to show how much you know and what you're good at?

Your task is to write a discussion about this! We want you to explore both sides of the argument:

  • On one hand, think about why exams are a good idea. Do they help teachers see who understands things? Do they make sure everyone learns the same important facts?
  • On the other hand, think about why exams might not be so fair or effective. Do they make some children feel very stressed? Do they only test memory, not creativity or other talents? Are there other ways we could check learning, like projects, presentations, or group work, that might be better or less stressful?

Write down your thoughts, looking at both the good and not-so-good things about exams. You don't have to pick a side right away; just explore the ideas!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Think about why exams are a good way to test what you've learned.

  • Now, think about why exams might not be the best way, or what makes them tricky.

  • Use connecting words like 'On the one hand...', 'However...', or 'Also...' to show different ideas.

  • Share your main thought or opinion at the end, based on what you've discussed.

📝 Sample Answer

Exams are a big part of school, but sometimes I wonder if they're the best way to find out what we truly know.

On the one hand, exams can be good because everyone gets the same questions. This means teachers can see who has learned the facts and understands the lessons. It's a clear way to measure if we're all keeping up. Also, knowing an exam is coming can make us study harder, which helps us remember important things for a long time.

However, exams can also be very stressful. Some children get really nervous and forget everything they know, even if they've studied a lot. Exams usually only test what we can write down, not other skills like being creative, working in a team, or doing practical tasks. Maybe a project where we research something and present it, or a group task, would show off different talents that exams miss. These ways might be less scary too.

Overall, exams have some good points for checking learning, but I think we should also use other ways, like projects, to see all the different things children can do and know.
