Free Time: Organised or Spontaneous?
The Prompt
Imagine you have some free time after school or on the weekend! What do you like to do?
Some children have lots of 'organised' activities, like football practice, ballet lessons, or learning to play an instrument. These activities are planned, often with a teacher or coach, and help you learn new skills or be part of a team.
Other children have more 'spontaneous' free time. This means time that isn't planned! They might just decide to build a den in the garden, invent a new game with friends, read a book for fun, or simply daydream. This kind of time allows for imaginative play and unexpected adventures.
Your task is to write a discussion about whether children should have more organised free time or more spontaneous, unplanned free time. Think about the good things (the 'benefits'!) that come from both types of free time. For example, what do you gain from going to a sports club? And what wonderful things happen when you have time just to play freely? Share your ideas and explain why each approach can be great.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Think about both 'organised' (like clubs) and 'spontaneous' (like free play) time. What's good about each?
- •
For organised time, imagine sports clubs or music lessons. How do they help you?
- •
For spontaneous time, think about playing in the garden or making up games. What fun things happen then?
- •
Use words like 'on the one hand' and 'on the other hand' to show you're talking about different ideas.
- •
Finish by saying what you think is best, or if a mix of both is good!
📝 Sample Answer
When I think about free time, I wonder if it's better to have it all planned out or just to see what happens.
On the one hand, organised activities are really good. For example, I go to swimming lessons, and it's helped me become a much stronger swimmer. My friend goes to a coding club and is learning how to make games! These activities teach us new skills and we meet other children who like the same things. It's also good for grown-ups because they know where we are.
However, spontaneous free time is also super important. Sometimes, the best fun happens when you don't have a plan. Last weekend, my sister and I just started building a huge fort in the living room out of blankets and cushions. We spent hours imagining we were explorers! Or sometimes, I just like to read a book I found, or draw whatever comes into my head. This kind of time lets your imagination run wild and you can be really creative.
I think both kinds of free time are brilliant. Organised time helps you learn and grow, while spontaneous time helps you relax and be creative. Maybe a good mix of both is the best way for children to have fun and learn.
