Strict Rules: Better for Behaviour?

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine two different types of schools. In one, there are lots of very strict rules: everyone wears the exact same uniform, you must always walk quietly in lines, and homework is always checked very carefully. In the other school, there are still rules, but they might be a bit more relaxed: maybe you can choose different colours for your uniform, or you have more time for creative projects.

Your task is to write about whether having really strict rules in school is a good thing or a bad thing.

Think about these questions:

  • Do strict rules help children learn better and behave more respectfully? Maybe they make everyone focus more, or stop arguments.
  • Or do strict rules stop children from being creative and showing their own unique personalities? Perhaps they make school less fun, or make children feel worried about trying new things.

You need to discuss both sides of the argument. What are the good points about strict rules? What are the not-so-good points? Finally, tell us what you think overall.

πŸ“ Sample Answer

In some schools, rules are very strict, like always wearing a perfect uniform or never talking in the corridors. Some people think this is a good idea. They say that strict rules make everyone behave well and listen to their teachers, which means lessons are calmer and children learn more. For example, if no one is running in the hall, it’s much safer for everyone. Also, if everyone wears the same uniform, nobody feels left out because of their clothes.

However, other people believe that too many strict rules can be a bit boring and stop children from being themselves. If you always have to be quiet and follow every single rule, it might be hard to be creative or show your personality. Maybe children feel a bit scared to try new things or ask questions if they worry about getting something wrong. It could make school feel less fun.

Overall, I think a balance is best. Some rules are definitely important for safety and learning, but too many strict rules might make school a less exciting place to be and stop children from showing their unique talents.
