Space Travel: Worth the Cost?
The Prompt
Imagine you're in charge of a huge pot of money. You have a big decision to make!
On one side, we have space travel. Rockets blast off, astronauts explore, and scientists discover amazing things about our universe. This exploration can lead to new inventions and help us understand our planet better. But, it costs a lot of money – billions and billions!
On the other side, we have problems right here on Earth. Things like helping people who are unwell, making sure everyone has enough food and clean water, or finding ways to stop climate change. These also need a lot of money to fix.
Your task is to write a discussion piece about this tricky choice. Do you think spending huge amounts on exploring space is worth it because of the amazing discoveries and benefits it brings? Or do you believe that all that money would be better spent solving the important problems we face every day on our own planet?
Try to look at both sides of the argument before you share your own opinion. There's no right or wrong answer, but your job is to explain your thoughts clearly and persuade your reader!
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Think of both sides: What are the good things about spending money on space? What are the good things about spending money on Earth problems?
- •
Give reasons: For each point you make, explain why you think that way.
- •
Use connecting words: Words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'also', 'because' will help your writing flow smoothly.
- •

- •
What do YOU think? After discussing both sides, what's your final opinion?
📝 Sample Answer
Space travel is truly amazing. Imagine flying to the moon or even Mars! Scientists learn so much from exploring space, like how our universe works and even new technologies that help us on Earth, such as satellite TV or better weather forecasts. Some people think it's worth every penny because these discoveries could help humanity in the long run, and it inspires us to dream big. It's also important to push the boundaries of what we know.
However, building rockets and sending astronauts into space costs billions of pounds. Think about all the problems we have down here on Earth. There are people without homes, children who don't have enough to eat, and our planet needs help with pollution. Many argue that this huge amount of money could be used to solve these urgent problems first, making life better for everyone right now. For example, imagine how many schools or hospitals could be built with the cost of one space mission.
In my opinion, while space exploration is exciting, I think we should focus more of our money on fixing the problems on Earth first. Once everyone has food, water, and a safe place to live, then we can look to the stars with a clearer conscience.
