Recycling: Enough or More Needed?

The Prompt

Imagine a world with less rubbish! We all know recycling is super important for helping our planet. We put our plastic bottles, paper, and glass in special bins, hoping they'll be made into something new. But is recycling all we need to do, or could we do even more?

In this writing task, you'll explore the big question: 'Recycling: Enough or More Needed?'

Your job is to write a discussion where you:

  1. Explain why recycling is so important and what good things happen when we recycle (like saving trees or energy).
  2. Think about if recycling is enough on its own, or if there are other ways we can help.
  3. Introduce and compare other 'superhero' strategies like 'reduce' (using less in the first place, e.g., not buying things you don't need) and 'reuse' (using things again instead of throwing them away, e.g., refilling a water bottle).
  4. Discuss which strategy you think is most effective or how they can all work together.

Your writing should show you've thought about different ideas and can explain them clearly. Good luck!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Think about both sides: Why is recycling good? Why might it not be enough?

  • Give examples! What do you recycle at home? How do you reduce or reuse things?

  • Remember the '3 Rs': Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Make sure you talk about all three.

  • Start with an introduction, then discuss your points, and finish with a conclusion.

  • Use words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'also', and 'in conclusion' to link your ideas.

📝 Sample Answer

Recycling is a fantastic way to help our planet, and it's something many of us do every week. When we recycle, old plastic bottles can become new ones, and used paper can be turned into fresh notebooks. This stops lots of rubbish from going into huge landfills and helps save important resources like trees and oil. It also uses less energy than making things from scratch.

However, some people think recycling isn't the only answer, or even the best one. Imagine if we didn't have as much to recycle in the first place! This is where 'reduce' and 'reuse' come in. 'Reduce' means simply using less; for example, bringing your own shopping bag instead of taking a new plastic one, or buying fewer toys you don't really need. 'Reuse' means finding new ways to use things instead of throwing them away, like using old jam jars for pencils or refilling a water bottle instead of buying a new one every time.

I think 'reduce' is perhaps the most powerful because if we create less waste, there's less to deal with overall. But all three — reduce, reuse, and recycle — work best when we do them together. Recycling is great, but by also reducing what we buy and reusing things, we can make an even bigger difference to keep our world clean and healthy.
