Fast Fashion: Ethical or Harmful?

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Have you ever bought a new t-shirt because it was cheap and looked cool? That's part of 'fast fashion'! It's all about making lots of trendy clothes quickly and cheaply, so we can always wear the latest styles. It sounds great, right? You get new clothes often without spending much money.

But is there a hidden cost? We want you to explore both sides of fast fashion. Think about why people love buying these clothes. What makes them so appealing?

Then, consider the downsides. How does making so many clothes so quickly affect our planet? (Think about rubbish, water pollution, or using up resources). And what about the people who work hard to make these clothes? Are they treated fairly?

Your task is to write a discussion, looking at both the good things people like about fast fashion and the not-so-good impacts it has on our world and its people. Try to present both arguments clearly, helping your reader understand the different points of view.

💡 Writing Tips

  • Start by explaining what fast fashion is and why people love it (think cheap, trendy clothes!).

  • Next, write about the problems: how it can harm our planet (like lots of waste or pollution) and the people who make the clothes (maybe they don't get paid much).

  • Use words like 'however', 'on the other hand', or 'although' to show both sides of the story.

  • Finish with a conclusion that summarises your thoughts – is it good, bad, or a bit of both?

📝 Sample Answer

Fast fashion is when shops sell lots of new, trendy clothes very cheaply and quickly. Many people love it because they can buy new outfits all the time without spending much pocket money. It's exciting to keep up with the latest looks, and it means everyone can afford stylish clothes. If a top goes out of fashion, it's easy to just buy a new one.

However, fast fashion also has a downside. Making so many clothes so fast can be bad for our planet. Factories use lots of water and energy, and often create pollution. Sometimes, clothes are thrown away after only a few wears, adding to big piles of rubbish. Also, the people who make these clothes in other countries might not get paid very much, and they might have to work in poor conditions. So, while fast fashion lets us wear cool clothes cheaply, it's important to think about what it costs the Earth and the people who make them.
