E-books vs. Physical Books

The Prompt

Imagine you're curled up with a good book! But wait, is it a colourful paperback you can hold in your hands, or a story glowing on a screen like an e-reader or tablet? Both are brilliant ways to read, but they're also quite different.

Your mission is to write an exciting piece where you become a detective, investigating 'E-books vs. Physical Books'. Think about all the ways they are similar (how they both let you read stories) and all the ways they are different (like how they feel, or how you get them).

For each type of book, consider the good things (the 'pros' – what makes them great!) and the bad things (the 'cons' – what might not be so good).

Think about you, the reader:

  • What's it like to read an e-book? Is it easy to carry lots of books? Is it tiring for your eyes?
  • What's it like to read a physical book? Do you love turning pages? Can you take it in the bath?

Also, think about our planet, the environment:

  • Do e-books save trees? Does making e-readers use up a lot of energy?
  • Does making paper books use trees? Can we recycle them?

Your job is to present both sides fairly, like a judge listening to two arguments, and then share your thoughts on which you think is better overall, and why!

📝 Sample Answer

When it comes to reading, there are two main ways to enjoy a story: a good old-fashioned paper book or a shiny new e-book on a tablet. Both have their good points and bad points.

Reading a physical book feels special. You can hold it, smell the paper, and turn the pages. I love seeing how many pages I've read and knowing I don't need to charge it! They're great for sharing with friends too. However, paper books can be heavy, especially if you want to take a few on holiday. For the environment, making paper books uses trees, but if we recycle them, that's a good thing.

E-books, on the other hand, are super convenient. You can carry hundreds of books on one small device, which is amazing for travelling. You can also change the font size, which helps some people read more easily. But staring at a screen for a long time can sometimes make my eyes tired, and you always need to remember to charge the device. Environmentally, e-books don't use paper, which saves trees. However, making the e-readers and tablets uses up precious materials and energy, and what happens to them when they break?

In conclusion, both types of books let us explore incredible worlds. While I love the feel of a physical book, e-books are very practical. I think we need both, and it's good to think about how we can be kind to the planet with whichever we choose.
