Longer School Days: Beneficial?

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedDiscursive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine your school day was a bit longer! Some grown-ups think this could be a really good idea – maybe we'd have more time for exciting subjects like coding, learn a new sport, or even try out fun clubs like drama or gardening. They believe it could help you learn even more and develop new skills.

But what if school days were longer? How would you feel? Others worry that longer days might make children feel very tired, leaving less time to play with friends, enjoy hobbies, or simply relax at home.

Your task is to write a discussion piece about whether longer school days would be a good or bad thing for children your age. Think about the 'sunny side' – the advantages like extra learning, new activities, or getting better at sports. Then, think about the 'cloudy side' – the disadvantages, like feeling worn out, having less time for fun outside school, or missing family time.

Try to present both sides fairly, sharing your thoughts on the potential benefits for learning and growing, AND the potential drawbacks for a child's happiness and free time. What do you think? Is it a brilliant idea, or would it be too much?

💡 Writing Tips

  • Think about both sides: What are the good things about longer school days? What are the not-so-good things?

  • Use linking words: Words like 'On the one hand...', 'However...', 'Also...', and 'In conclusion...' help your writing flow.

  • Give examples: What specific subjects or activities could be added? How might children feel if days were longer?

  • Plan your ideas: Before you start writing, quickly list your 'pros' (advantages) and 'cons' (disadvantages).

  • Start strong and finish clear: Begin with an introduction that tells the reader what you'll discuss, and end with a conclusion that sums up your main points.

📝 Sample Answer

Some people think school days should be longer. On the one hand, this could be really good! We might get to do more fun things like extra art projects, learn a new language, or spend more time playing different sports. It could mean we learn loads more and get to try out exciting new clubs that aren't possible now. For example, we could have a proper cooking class or even learn how to play chess every week. This would definitely help us discover new talents and become cleverer.

However, on the other hand, I think longer school days could make children very tired. We already work hard, and if the day was longer, we might feel too worn out to enjoy our evenings. We need time to play outside, read our favourite books, or just relax with our families. If school finished later, there would be less time for homework, seeing friends, or even just having a quiet moment to ourselves. It's important to have free time to be happy and healthy, not just learn all day.
