In a sheltered corner of the pond, a dragonfly clung to a reed. Its long body was the colour of polished emerald, divided into tiny sections that caught the sunlight. Four transparent wings stretched from its back, each marked with veins as delicate as the lines on a leaf.
Around it, the pond was busy with life. Water snails crept across submerged stones, and a frog blinked from beneath a floating lily pad. Warm air rose from the shallow water, carrying the earthy smell of wet mud. The dragonfly remained motionless, its enormous eyes seeming to notice everything at once.
Without warning, it sprang into the air. Its wings became a silvery blur. It hovered above the reeds, darted sideways and then stopped so suddenly that it seemed to hang from an invisible thread. A tiny fly zigzagged over the water; the dragonfly swept after it and disappeared through the grasses.
When it returned, it settled on the very same reed. Its wings glittered briefly, and the green stem bowed under its almost weightless body. All around it, the quiet pond carried on with its hidden, restless life.
