How do I work out what a word or phrase means in the passage?

Use the sentence around the word, the mood of the moment and nearby clues.

Step-by-step approach for Year 5-6

  1. Read the whole sentence, not just the difficult word.
  2. Replace the word with your own simple meaning and check if it fits.
  3. Use the context to explain what the word suggests in that moment.
  4. For written answers, avoid giving a dictionary definition if the passage uses the word differently.

What to look for

  • Words before and after the target word.
  • Whether the sentence sounds positive, negative or uncertain.
  • A character's actions, expression or tone of voice.
  • Contrasts such as but, however, although or instead.

Worked example

Example question

What does the word "reluctantly" suggest about the character?

Short extract

Maya reluctantly opened the gate, keeping one hand on the latch as if she might still change her mind.

Model answer

"Reluctantly" suggests that Maya does not really want to open the gate. The detail that she keeps her hand on the latch shows she is unsure and may want to stop.

Exam tip

If you are stuck, ask: what is happening in the sentence, and what feeling would make sense here?
