Flexible School Holidays
Write an engaging opinion article for a popular parenting website about school holidays.
Your Task: Choose one side of the debate and argue strongly for it:
- Option A: Families should have the freedom to choose when children take their holidays throughout the year.
- Option B: All schools should keep fixed, identical holiday dates.
Your goal is to write a persuasive piece that convinces parents your chosen system is best. Consider how your choice impacts classroom learning, family wellbeing, and school organisation.
💡 Writing Tips
- •
Pick a Side: Decide if you think holidays should be flexible (families choose) or fixed (everyone at the same time). You can't argue both!
- •
Think of Reasons: Why is your idea the best? Brainstorm 2-3 strong reasons. For example, flexible holidays might mean cheaper trips or more time with busy parents. Fixed holidays might mean friends are always off together or schools can plan better.
- •
Imagine Your Reader: You're writing for parents. What do they care about? (e.g., their children's learning, family fun, managing work).
- •
Use Strong Words: Words like 'definitely', 'clearly', 'crucial', 'essential' can help convince your reader. Don't just state your opinion, explain why.
- •
Start Strong, End Strong: Grab the reader's attention at the beginning and finish with a powerful sentence that makes them agree with you.

Why Fixed Holidays Are the Best for Everyone!
Imagine a world where all your friends are off school at different times. You might go on holiday, but when you get back, everyone else has already been, or isn't going until later! This is why I believe school holidays should stay fixed for everyone.
Firstly, fixed holidays are brilliant for friendships. All the children in the class, and even the whole school, get to enjoy their breaks at the same time. This means more playdates, more fun at holiday clubs, and more shared adventures. If holidays were flexible, children might miss out on these important social times, returning to school to find their friends have made new memories they weren't part of. It's also much easier for schools to plan exciting trips and special events when they know all the pupils will be there for the learning and fun. Keeping holidays fixed means everyone learns and plays together, making school a more connected and exciting place for us all.
