Ban Sugary School Drinks

The Prompt

Get ready to write a super persuasive essay for our school magazine! We all know sugary drinks are popular, but what do you think about them being sold in school? Your mission is to write an article arguing one of two things:

  1. Ban Them! Argue that all sugary drinks (like fizzy pop and some sweet fruit juices) should be completely removed from school. Explain why this would help us all be healthier and make better choices, like drinking water or milk. Think about our teeth, our energy levels, and how we learn.

  2. Keep the Choice! Argue that it's important for pupils to have a variety of drink choices, including some sugary options. Explain why having a choice is good, perhaps for special treats, or if some people prefer them. You could argue that learning to make sensible choices is part of growing up.

Choose one side and write a convincing essay to persuade everyone in our school community – pupils, teachers, and parents – that your opinion is the right one. Make your arguments clear, strong, and use examples to back up your points!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Pick a side: Decide if you want to ban sugary drinks OR keep a varied choice. Stick to just one!

  • Give reasons: Think of at least three strong reasons why your chosen side is the best idea.

  • Use strong words: Words like 'definitely', 'crucial', 'important', 'harmful' can make your arguments more convincing.

  • Imagine your reader: Write as if you are trying to persuade your friends, teachers, and parents in the school magazine.

  • Start and finish strong: Hook your reader in the first sentence and leave them thinking about your point in the last.

📝 Sample Answer

Say Goodbye to Sugary Sips!

Imagine a school where everyone has more energy, brighter smiles, and learns even better! This dream could become a reality if we make one simple, brave change: ban all sugary drinks from our school premises.

Think about it. Those fizzy drinks and sweet juices are packed with sugar. This isn't just bad for our teeth, causing nasty cavities, but it also gives us a quick sugar rush followed by a big energy slump. How can we concentrate in maths when our energy has crashed? Drinking water or milk keeps us hydrated and focused all day long.

Some might say we should have a choice, but when it comes to our health, sometimes the best choices are made to help us. By removing sugary drinks, we're not taking away fun; we're promoting a healthier future for everyone. Let's make our school a place where healthy habits are easy to choose and where we all thrive!
