Mandatory School Clubs

The Prompt

Imagine our school is having a big debate about school clubs! You know, all those fun activities like football, art, coding, or drama that happen after lessons. Right now, joining a club is a choice – you can join one if you want to. But some people think everyone should have to join a club, while others think it's really important to keep it optional.

Your job is to write a powerful argument for this debate. You need to pick a side: do you think joining a school club must be compulsory for every single student? Or do you strongly believe that students should always have the freedom to choose whether they join a club or not? Whichever side you pick, you need to write a strong argument to convince everyone else.

If you think clubs should be compulsory, explain all the amazing ways it could help students learn new things, make new friends, and try activities they never thought they'd like. If you think clubs should stay optional, argue why having a choice is super important for students' happiness, free time, and ability to pick things they truly love. Remember, you're trying to persuade people to agree with your point of view!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Pick a side! Do you think clubs should be compulsory or shouldn't?

  • Give strong reasons for your choice. For example, if compulsory, how does it help? If optional, why is choice important?

  • Use persuasive words! Words like 'definitely', 'vital', 'everyone should', or 'it's unfair to'.

  • Imagine you're trying to convince your headteacher or your friends to agree with you.

  • Finish with a strong sentence that makes people want to agree with your point of view!

📝 Sample Answer

Good morning everyone! I'm here today to talk about something incredibly important: why every single student in our school should have to join a school club. Imagine a world where you never tried something new because you thought you wouldn't like it. School clubs are amazing opportunities! If joining was compulsory, students would discover hidden talents, make new friends outside their usual group, and even boost their confidence. Think about it: someone who loves maths might discover they're brilliant at drama, or a quiet student could find their voice in the debating club. It's not about taking away choice; it's about opening doors to experiences that could change lives and help everyone become more well-rounded and happy. Making clubs compulsory is the best way to ensure every child gets these fantastic opportunities!
