Less Traffic Noise Now

The Prompt

Imagine trying to read a book, play in your garden, or even just sleep, but all you can hear is the constant rumble and roar of cars, lorries, and motorbikes! This endless noise, especially from traffic, is called 'noise pollution', and it can make our neighbourhoods feel less peaceful and even affect our health and happiness.

Your mission is to become a 'Noise Detective' and a 'Peace Champion'! Write a powerful appeal (like a letter or a speech) to the people who live around you (your local residents) and to the people who run our town (the local council). You need to convince them that something must be done to make our streets quieter.

Think about:

  • The Problem: How does traffic noise make your neighbourhood feel? What are the problems it causes for people? (e.g., hard to sleep, hard to concentrate, makes you grumpy).
  • The Solutions: What ideas do you have to make it quieter? (e.g., asking cars to stick to a 20mph speed limit, encouraging electric vehicles, planting big hedges or building special walls to block sound).
  • The Benefits: Explain why these changes are good. How will a quieter neighbourhood help everyone? (e.g., we'll be healthier, happier, sleep better, enjoy our gardens more, and hear the birds sing!).

Your writing should make people really want to make a change for a more peaceful and healthy neighbourhood!

📝 Sample Answer

Dear Residents and Council Members,

Do you ever wish our neighbourhood was a little quieter? I certainly do! Every day, the constant roar of traffic makes it hard to concentrate on my homework, play outside, or even just relax. This noise pollution isn't just annoying; it stops us from enjoying our homes and can even make us feel stressed.

I believe we need to take urgent action to reduce traffic noise. Imagine if cars drove slower, sticking to a 20mph limit, or if more people used quiet electric cars! We could even plant tall, bushy hedges along busy roads to soak up some of the sound. If we work together, our streets could become peaceful havens.

A quieter neighbourhood means healthier, happier residents. Children could play more safely, birdsong would replace engine hums, and we could all get a better night's sleep. Let's make our community a calm and pleasant place for everyone. Please consider these vital changes for a better, quieter future.
