School Pets: Good Idea?
The Prompt
Imagine having a fluffy rabbit, a chirping budgie, or even a tank of colourful fish right here in your classroom! Some schools already have class pets, but what about our school? Your mission is to write a powerful, persuasive letter to our Headteacher, Mrs. or Mr. [Headteacher's Name - or just 'the Headteacher'], to convince them that every classroom should – or absolutely should not – have an animal.
You need to pick one side and argue your case strongly. Think about:
- The fun and learning: How could a pet help us learn new things in science or teach us to be kind and responsible?
- The hard work: What would it take to look after a pet every day? Who would feed it, clean it, and make sure it's healthy?
- The tricky bits: Are there any downsides? What if someone is allergic? Or what about holidays?
Your letter needs to be convincing, clear, and polite. Show the Headteacher why your idea is the very best one for our school!

📝 Sample Answer
Dear Mrs. Davies,
I am writing to you today to strongly suggest that our school should introduce a class pet into every classroom. I believe this would be a wonderful idea that would benefit all pupils.
Firstly, having a class pet, like a hamster or some fish, would teach us so much about responsibility. We could create a rota for feeding, cleaning, and making sure the animal has fresh water. Learning to care for another living creature would help us become more caring and organised individuals, skills that are important both in school and in life.
Secondly, a class pet would be an amazing learning tool. Imagine watching a hamster build its nest or fish swimming peacefully – it would bring our science lessons to life! We could observe their behaviour, learn about their habitats, and even write stories about them. This hands-on experience is much more exciting than just reading from a book.
I know you might worry about who would look after the pets during holidays or if someone has allergies. For allergies, we could choose hypoallergenic pets or keep them in a safe area. For holidays, I am sure many families, including mine, would be thrilled to volunteer to look after the class pet, seeing it as an extension of our learning.
Introducing class pets would make our classrooms even more engaging and help us grow into responsible, empathetic learners. Please consider this exciting opportunity for our school.
Yours sincerely,
[Pupil's Name] Year 5
