Summer Holidays Too Long

The Prompt

Imagine you're a super-smart writer for an online 'Education Blog' – that's a website where people talk about school and learning. Your job is to write an opinion piece. This means you're going to share your strong feelings and reasons about a big question: Are our summer holidays too long?

Some people think the long summer break is wonderful! They believe it's super important for kids to have lots of time to relax, play, go on adventures with family, and just be kids without worrying about schoolwork. They might argue that this rest helps you come back to school feeling refreshed and ready to learn.

On the other hand, some people worry that such a long break means children might forget some of the amazing things they learned during the school year. This is sometimes called 'learning loss'. They might think shorter holidays, with more frequent breaks, would help everyone remember more and keep learning smoothly.

Your challenge is to pick a side! Do you think summer holidays should be a bit shorter to help with learning, or do you believe they are just the right length for fun, rest, and family time? Write a convincing article for the blog, using your best persuasive writing skills to explain why you believe what you do. Make sure your reasons are clear and strong, trying to convince the readers to agree with you!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Pick a side: First, decide if you think summer holidays are too long or just right. Stick to that one idea!

  • Give strong reasons: Think of 2 or 3 good reasons why you believe what you do. For example, "Children forget things over a long break" or "We need time to relax and play!"

  • Use 'persuading' words: Words like 'clearly', 'definitely', 'everyone knows', 'it's important to remember'.

  • Imagine the other side: What might someone who disagrees with you say? Briefly mention their idea, then explain why your idea is better.

  • Start with a bang and end with a punch! Make your first sentence grab attention and your last sentence leave a strong impression.

📝 Sample Answer

Summer holidays are one of the best parts of being a kid, but I strongly believe they are just too long. While everyone loves a break, a two-month holiday means that by September, it feels like I've forgotten half of what I learned! Teachers then have to spend weeks helping us catch up, which wastes valuable time. If we had slightly shorter summer breaks, maybe four or five weeks, with more frequent, shorter holidays throughout the year, we would stay much sharper. This would keep our brains active and ready, making learning much easier and more continuous. We'd still get plenty of rest, but without the big gap where all our hard work slips away.
