Stop Littering: Impose Fines

Primary & ElementaryAdvancedPersuasive Writing

The Prompt

Imagine our lovely streets and parks, sparkling clean and safe for everyone! But sometimes, litter spoils the view and harms our wildlife. Your mission is to write a powerful letter or speech to your local Neighbourhood Watch group, who are adults dedicated to making our community better.

You need to convince them that we MUST do something about littering. You can argue for stricter rules and bigger fines (that's money people have to pay if they break the rules) for anyone who drops litter. Explain why you think this would work and how it would make our area cleaner and nicer.

OR, if you don't think fines are the best idea, you can suggest different ways to stop people from littering. Maybe more bins? Or fun campaigns? Or having community clean-up days? Whatever you choose, make sure you explain your reasons clearly and try to persuade the Neighbourhood Watch that your idea is the best way forward for our neighbourhood. Make them believe in your plan to keep our community beautiful!

💡 Writing Tips

  • Start with a clear statement of your main idea – do you think fines are best, or something else?

  • Give at least two strong reasons why litter is a problem (e.g., looks bad, harms animals).

  • Explain how your chosen solution (fines or an alternative) would make things better.

  • Use powerful words to convince your audience, like "urgently," "crucial," or "imagine."

  • Remember you're writing to your local Neighbourhood Watch – they want to keep the area nice!

📝 Sample Answer

Dear Neighbourhood Watch,

I am writing to you today because I feel very strongly about the litter in our neighbourhood. It makes our streets look messy, it's bad for the environment, and it can even hurt animals. I believe the best way to tackle this problem is to introduce much stricter fines for anyone caught dropping litter.

Imagine if everyone knew they would have to pay a big fine if they threw rubbish on the ground. People would think twice before doing it! If we make the fines significant, it would send a clear message: our community cares about being clean and tidy. This would not only deter litterbugs but also encourage everyone to take pride in our beautiful area. Let's make our neighbourhood a sparkling example for others!
